Plastics In Our Oceans & The Jumpyn Beach Clean Up
Here at the Jumpyn office we are as concerned as the rest of the planet about the huge impact that plastics are having on the rivers, seas and oceans.
As a species we are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use. More than 8 million tons of this plastic is dumped into our oceans, every year! Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century.
We have developed a 'disposable lifestyle' in our every day lives, estimates are that 50% of plastics are used once and thrown away. We have all seen the media coverage around this issue and you only have to visit your local beach to see for yourself the impact this is having.
One of our local beaches is Sizewell beach on the Suffolk coast, while this beach is not blighted by tons of plastic on the shore there is still a lot that can be done to improve this part of the coastline.
Starting August 2018 we are going to be organising a monthly beach clean up, starting at Sizewell beach in Suffolk. As this is a new initiative it is a work in progress but we hope to bulid on this idea to hopefully have beach clean ups at different locations around the UK.
What we thought we would do is to offer ten minutes of a single persons time to a beach clean every time a booking is made through the Jumpyn website. Simple really, so for example, 100 bookings across a month would equate to 10 hours of beach cleaning, if you had ten people on a beach clean this would be an hour for each person.
We will be documenting the beach cleans with photos and video footage so you can see what we get up too. If you would like to volunteer some time to get involved please get in touch with Matthew at [email protected]
Our first beach clean up will be at Sizewell beach on the morning of the 23rd August.
